JUPITER, FL – March 8, 2007
– The Library Binding Institute (LBI) is hosting a hardcover binding technology seminar at the Sheraton Springfield Monarch Place Hotel in Springfield, MA on Saturday, September 29, 2007 from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Early registration by June 15, 2007 is only $149.00. Breakfast and lunch will be provided.

This one-day event will include an introduction to hardcover binding and a discussion of the best binding options for text blocks like adhesive bindings, sewing and cover structures. Various binding systems and an introduction to materials and techniques used in hardcover bindings will also be covered. This includes solving problems like cover warp and selecting appropriate reinforcements. Additionally, participants will learn how one library binder successfully added digital printing and today, is a major supplier for On-Demand publishing services.  Materials and machinery suppliers will exhibit their products and participate in the discussions.

LBI is celebrating their 72nd year in existence as an information resource and standard-setting organization serving its members and the industry as a whole. “This seminar offers both members and non-members the opportunity to learn more about how hardcover bookbinding technology will help ensure the integrity of books,” said Werner Rebsamen, Professor Emeritus of The Rochester Institute of Technology who is serving as the seminar’s facilitator. “Techniques and materials will be discussed including paper, adhesives and covers. Binding methods, sewing, reinforcing, hot-stamping, laminating, warp reduction, blocking and equipment used in these processes will also be covered. The seminar will end with a discussion on all aspects of on-demand hardcover binding.”

“If you are a book manufacturer, binder, on-demand printer, equipment vendor, administrator, operator or industry leader, this is a great educational and networking opportunity,” said Jay Fairfield, president of LBI. Fairfield also serves as president of The HF Group, a nationwide library binding and information services company with locations throughout the United States.

In addition to the seminar, a special tour of Bridgeport National Bindery (www.bnbindery.com), a state-of-the-art bindery specializing in library binding, hardcover binding, print-on-demand and short run binding is scheduled on Friday, September 28, 2007.

LBI is the premiere information resource on library binding. It exists to ensure the highest standards in library binding and to create awareness that library binding is the best long-term collections maintenance preservation option. LBI members adhere to the ANSI/NISO/LBI Z39-78 2000 Library Binding Standard. In addition to library binding, LBI members offer a variety of products/services including short run, on demand binding, prebinding, textbook rebinding, edition and trade binding, scanning books for digital storage or production, book repair and conservation.

The seminar and tour will be held in conjunction with the LBI 2007 Fall Conference.
